Horizon West is a part of one of biggest real estate booms in central Florida. It is an area in the southwest part of Orange County, Florida just north of the Walt Disney World Resort.
It is bounded by SR 192 on the south, SR 429 on the west, SR 50 on the north, and I-4 and the Florida Turnpike on the east. There are 31 plus new communities under development in this area. Like many developments Horizon West was begun prior to the real estate downturn of 2008, but it has now come back more robust than ever.
It crosses a number of villages and towns in this area including Lake Buena Vista, Bayhill, Dr. Phillips, Lake Butler, Windermere, Ocoee, Davenport, Winter Garden, and more. It has a town center at Hamlin and has numerous planned conservation areas and greenbelts as well as championship golf. Horizon West is also home to many very desirable home sites as the Butler Chain of Lakes found within its borders as well as a number of other lake front areas.
There is hardly any location within the Orlando metropolitan area that is more desirable or more conveniently located. I-4, the Florida Turnpike, US 27, SR 429, and SR 50 (Colonial Drive) make it literally minutes from anywhere in the metropolitan Orlando area including Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Studios, SeaWorld, Legoland, the Holyland experience, International Drive, Downtown Orlando, the Orlando airport, shopping, fine dining, entertainment, and sporting events. Only slightly over one hour east or west lie some of the best beaches in the US.

A visionary group of property owners, whose groves had died, knew the future was in real estate not growing citrus and met in a restaurant in Winter Garden to create a new future. They organized Horizon West in 1993. They met with experts from the public and private sectors and developed a master plan. The two-year process led to a comprehensive plan with five villages and a town center.
Original plans for Horizon West called for up to nine villages on 38,000 acres. But throughout the years, Reedy Creek Improvement District annexed some of the land, and, in 2004, residents around Lake Avalon and Johns Lake opted out of Horizon West, deciding to designate their 4,500-acre community as a rural settlement, which would limit the lot size and maintain the country flavor of the area.
