He purchased his first orange grove in Satsuma FL but was forced to return to Tennessee in 1895 after one of the worst freezes in Florida history destroyed what would have been Dr. Phillips’ first orange crop.

But the young Doctor Phillips persevered. Returning to Florida in 1897, this time to the central Florida area that now bears his name where he converted over 5000 acres of central Florida scrub land into one of Florida’s largest citrus groves and packing facilities.

As his citrus empire grew, Dr. Phillips filled his need for labor with people from the Bahamas. He instituted housing for the workers, and a post office was added a short time later, officially establishing Dr. Phillips as a recognized community.

The Dr Phillips area today is much different than in its fledgling years, but Dr Phillips name still lives on through several anthropological contributions including the widely known The Dr. P. Phillips Foundation, whose motto remains, “To help others help themselves.”
